As we look back at the historical 150+ years of St. Mary's College, Trincomalee, we are flooded with memories of gratitude to all those who put their heart and soul into nurturing and molding it and making it what it is today. Beginnings are always tedious. This was the same with our college too. Yet, the constant support from well-wishers and others extended from its inception helped us to cross those obstacles.
The school was founded by an Irish woman named Mrs. Mary Ann O'Flannagan, who was a courageous and dynamic person, heeding the request of the Vicar Apostolic of Jaffna, Rt. Rev. Dr. Semeria OMI. It was handed over to the Holy Family Sisters from Jaffna Diocese in 1882. The Cluny Sisters took the reins in 1899 because of the request of Rt. Rev. Lavigne S. J., Bishop of Trincomalee. Finally, after the Cluny Sisters bade farewell in 1922, the Apostolic Carmel Sisters took up the school on the request made by the Bishop of Trincomalee, Rt. Rev. Dr. Gaston Robichez S. J. and have taken care of the school until today.
